Following the Shipley Citizens’ Jury on Climate, community led actions and local initiatives are encouraged to address the climate crisis. For the first time in 2023/24 Shipley Town Council set aside £7, 000 per year for its Green Grants scheme. Seven grants were allocated in the first year following a public vote. As a result of this success the scheme was run again in 2024/25 resulting in 4 grants being awarded to the projects local people and organisations would like to run. Take a look below at what is being achieved with this funding.
Project Updates
Play Street Pioneers (Street Space Community CIC) are setting up playing out sessions this summer on streets where they live, demonstrating that a new kind of street is possible.
Here are the details of the dates and streets across Shipley where families can join in the fun:
Each Pioneer has a Play Street Kit Bag so you don’t need to bring anything – playing out happens really naturally as the street acts as a blank canvas for creative games and play.
Vehicle access is still possible during the play streets (cars will be walked through by volunteer stewards) and parents need to supervise their own children during a play street (like normal!).

Application Process
Bids for each individual project can be for any amount up to a maximum of £2, 000 and should address actions in the Council’s Climate Action Plan under the four main headings of; Transport, Housing, Education and Nature.

Canal & Rivers Trust Garden Party Volunteers were awarded £1, 960 to extend the bog garden started with last year’s grant at the old Bradford spur (junction of Stone Arch Bridge, Shipley)

Nifty Sustainability was awarded £2, 000 for the Old Spring Wood Meadow – permanent pathway infrastructure, supplementing planting / seating and introduction of “little library” with education / outreach and consultation on a further extension

Saltaire WI / The Little Craft House were awarded £1950.00 for their “Knit for Climate” community workshops leading to a stunning display of changing temperatures in Shipley
Saltaire Primary School Eco Club were awarded £620 to create an outdoor learning area with plants and wildlife in school grounds
Louise Yates was awarded £1080 to develop the Wash House Gardens, Caroline Street, Saltaire with an edible planting scheme
Nifty Sustainability were awarded £950 to run 2 workshops around Shipley’s Climate Action Plan
Katie Shepherd was awarded £970 to create a Shipley Nature Connection map of free to access spaces where people can connect with nature but subsequently returned the grant
Jo Pike was awarded £1569 to start and build a Local Sustainable Food Network piloting apple harvest (this project has been deferred)
