Vacancy for Co-option (Saltaire & Hirst Wood)

Vacancy for a town councillor to be filled by co-option

Shipley Town Council has a casual vacancy for a councillor in the Saltaire and Hirst Wood ward.  The vacancy has arisen following the resignation of a councillor, with no valid petition for a by-election being received. The vacancy will therefore be filled by co-option, which is a decision made by the councillors at a meeting of the Council. The co-opted councillor will serve until the next ordinary local government elections (which are likely to be held on Thursday 6 May 2027) or until they resign. Co-opted councillors are required by law to be both qualified and not disqualified to serve as members of a local authority.

Application forms will be made available from Thursday 20 March.  The provisional date for the co-option meeting is Thursday 26 June at 7.00pm.

Applicants are also requested to submit a brief written statement, to a suggested maximum of five hundred words.  The statement should outline (1) why you would like to be a councillor and (2) what you could bring to Shipley Town Council. There are some areas of the Council’s current work that would benefit from additional support. The Council is, therefore, particularly keen to learn about applicants’ specific interests or areas of focus. All other things being equal, councillors are minded to giving weight to addressing the gaps in the current councillors’ interests and areas of focus. This will help to ensure that all functions are well-supported.

Councillors must be present in person at meetings, by law.  The Council’s default method of communication is e-mail.  Reasonable adjustments will be made if requested.

For an application form, please contact the Town Council office.
