Shipley Town Council has applied to Bradford Council for the old Garden Centre site in Hirst Wood, Shipley to be registered as an Asset of Community Value.
The site, next to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and Saltaire World Heritage Site has been in a state of dilapidation for a number of years.
Owners Hartley Property Trust have applied to build houses on the land but planners have turned down their applications. Now the Town Council, Ward Councillors and community groups Hirst Wood Regeneration Group and Higher Coach Road Residents Group want to see the land used for the benefit of the local community.
If the land is registered as an Asset of Community Value the Town Council or community groups would be given the opportunity to express an interest in bidding for the land if it is put up for sale by the owner. This would create an opportunity for the land to be purchased and put to use by and for the local community.
Ideas put forward in the application for potential uses for the site include creating a community woodland or garden, a new nature reserve, allotments or a community orchard. The applicants believe the space could create a range of educational opportunities for school and college students as well as providing a space that is accessible to all that could possibly include a ‘sensory garden’ or even a Covid memorial garden.
Chair of Shipley Town Council Planning and Regeneration Committee Anna Watson said “This land has been left in an abandoned and derelict state by the landowners for far too long. The area around the site at Hirst Wood has been transformed through the hard work of community groups over the last few years and this site remains a blot on the landscape.
“Local residents would like to see the land put to good use in ways that would benefit both visitors and the local community. If this application is approved it would give the local community the chance to turn a run-down site into something the whole community can benefit from. I hope that Bradford Council will look favourably on this application.“
