Shipley Green Grants
Last year, Shipley Town Council ran a Citizens’ Jury on Climate to increase participation and engagement with the most important issue of our time. The Jury produced 14 recommendations of how we can address the climate crisis at a local level.
This year, to address some of those recommendations, Shipley Town Council are introducing a new project that will involve more local people in our decision making.
Through the Shipley ‘Green Grants’ scheme, local people and organisations will be able to put in funding bids for projects they would like to run. The decisions on which projects will receive funding will be made by the Shipley community at a public meeting in January where projects will be voted on.
Shipley Town Council has allocated £7,000 this year for the scheme. We hope to run this project for at least 3 years, so there may be £21,000 in total available over the three years.
We will be welcoming bids to address the four main areas of the Citizens’ Jury on Climate recommendations: Housing, Transport, Education and Nature which now form the Town Council’s Climate Action Plan.
We want to enable charitable organisations, social enterprises, community groups and local people to develop creative ideas to help our community and the environment to flourish.
Ideas could be about:
- Helping improve energy efficiency of Shipley’s homes
- Providing cycling skills courses
- Developing teaching resources about climate change
- Improving a green area where you live
Bids for each individual project can be for any amount up to a maximum of £2,000.
Bidders will be expected to give a 3-minute presentation on their idea at a public meeting and those attending the meeting will vote on their 1st, 2nd and 3rd favourite projects and the winners will get their grant.
