The hard work of Shipley in Bloom volunteers has been recognised with the prestigious Level 5 – “Outstanding” award in the RHS Yorkshire in Bloom “It’s Your Neighbourhood” competition. This achievement celebrates the volunteers’ efforts to enhance Shipley town centre with beautiful and sustainable green spaces.
The Yorkshire in Bloom judges were introduced to the 9/11 Memorial Garden at Asda, lovingly maintained by employee Sid in his own time. Following this, they admired the planters and hanging baskets at the police station, which were creatively planted in this year’s theme to match the vibrant emergency colours of police vehicles.
The tour led to the tranquil oasis of the Baptist Church Garden, where volunteers, including members of Saltaire WI and the church, have transformed the space into a peaceful retreat. The judges’ report commended the impressive progress made in a short time, noting how “it provides a lovely green haven for both wildlife and people in the district.”
The final stop was the Westgate decking, where the planters not only add vibrant colour to the street but also supply fresh herbs for local businesses, including RP’s Café and Hullaballoo. These businesses had sponsored the recent transformation of the area, further supporting the volunteers’ mission to improve the community.
One of the volunteers, and Shipley Town Council’s Deputy Clerk, Helen Mawson said: “It gives me a buzz when people stop and tell us what a good job we are doing and have a little chat. That’s how we know that we are making a difference to individuals and the town”
Councillor Rhona North, Vice Chair of Shipley Town Council which funds the volunteers’ endeavours, said “It’s amazing what passionate volunteers from all backgrounds can do when they get together to make a sustainable difference through gardening. We are proud of and thankful for all those who give their time to make Shipley bloom and it is wonderful that their hard work has been recognised in this way.”
