Shipley is home to a brilliant variety of independent businesses, found on streets across the town.
We’re putting the spotlight on some of these hidden treasures, and this month is the turn of Kirkgate. Part of the Shipley Centre and Dockfield constituency, the street has a number of independent businesses – some who have been on the street for over 80 years!
Here’s who you can find on Kirkgate:

- Para Picar Café Bar Restaurant
This hidden gem is one for all food lovers! Serving a Spanish inspired menu covering lunch and early dinner, Para Picar was founded by chef Peter three years ago. The kitchen and deli has gone from strength to strength gaining a stellar reputation. The venue is full licensed and can be hired for private parties.
- Hair Design Team
Friends, Lisa and Natalie opened the Hair Design Team salon 15 years ago. Styling women, children and men, the salon stocks the latest products and specialises purely in haircare and styling. Natalie said: “It’s nice being part of the street with all the other independent businesses.”
- Wm Eastell Florist
The family run florist has been part of the street since 1937 when it was founded by William Eastell. With fresh flowers delivered daily, along with gifts, cards, candles and faux flowers, the store is the perfect place to pick up a present for someone special. The eye catching window displays are created by manager Sarah who is the 4th generation of the family to run the shop. Having previously being a PE teacher, Sarah took over the shop after her father retired. Sarah adds: “It’s a great street with lots on offer. We’d love to see more people coming to visit.”
- Indie Boho Vintage
This treasure trove of vintage, homeware and ethically sourced gifts and products is one not to miss. Founder Laura has recently celebrated the shop’s 1st birthday having moved her online business to the venue last year. Shipley resident, Laura adds: “There’s a lovely community spirit amongst all the other independent stores. It’s great that we’re able to offer something different for the people and visitors to the area”
- House of Paws
Ellie opened House of Paws in May 2022, and has been a dog groomer for 15 years. Having always dreamed about having her own business, Ellie made the decision after covid to move her home business into a high street location. The business caters for all dogs, specialising in mid to small sized furry friends. Ellie says: “It’s lovely meeting people and being part of this friendly street.”
