Shipley is home to lots of independent businesses and companies who have made Shipley their home for many years. The Shipley Street Spotlight puts the focus on an area of our town which has a number of local businesses that you may not have noticed on your travels.
This month, the spotlight is on some of the businesses on Otley Road. From fisheries, and artisan coffee shops, to car mechanics and furniture stores, there’s a great mix to visit. Here’s a bit more information on these great businesses.
- Doyle’s Fisheries
Doyle’s has been serving up fish and chips to the people of Shipley for over 15 years! Managed by Paul for the last 9 years, it was originally founded by his father. The family run businesses cooks all the food in vegetable oil. With lots of offers and value meals, the business is a popular eatery for many. Although Paul admits the town has changed a lot of the years, he’s hopefully the changes planned for the town will bring more visitors to the area.
- Shipley Sofa Centre and Furniture City
If you’re looking for a new piece of upholstery or piece of furniture for the home, make a visit to the large unit that took over the former Laura Ashley store a few years ago. Owned by Peter, the store is open 7 days a week, offering free delivery and free parking. From stunning cushions, to three piece suits, dining furniture and framed pictures, it’s a treasure trove of delights.
- Drive-In Mechanics
You can’t miss the car garage that’s been part of Otley Road for over 35 years! Managed by Tony for the last 12 years, the garage has become a familiar face to many who have taken their cars to be fixed for many years. The majority of the workers on site are from the local area and they often encourage customers to visit local businesses such as The Bothy to grab a coffee whilst they wait.

Julia is the assistant manager and has worked for the company for the past 5 years. Originally from Saltaire, Julia loves the local community and how much is always going on, and how close you are to everything from shops to the great outdoors.
- Salvation Army Donation Centre
The charity shop has been open for the last 4 years and is managed by Angie. With everything from clothes, to furniture, toys and electrics, the large store is helped by 29 volunteers. The shop has lots of regular customers, with a real community feel. They are always open to donations and anyone wanting to volunteer a few hours.
- The Bothy
Tom opened The Bothy back in December 2020 and hasn’t looked back! The welcoming café makes all their own food on site, from tasty lunches, to home-baked goods, and they even have their own blend of coffee! Alongside the café, they provide catering for gatherings and the venue can be used for private hire. The café is part of the Borrow scheme and all mugs are biodegradable. Workshops with other local suppliers also regularly take place so check out their socials for more info!
